"Trekkies" were first termed by the science fiction editor, Arthur W. Saha in 1967 in accordance with his observations of Star Trek fans wearing pointy ears (based on the characters) at the 25th World Science Fiction Convention. Gene Roddenberry, the series creator, endorsed the term, "Trekkies" and it became to be a widely used.
