Influence on Pop Culture
Trekkies have been incorporated into media in numerous fashions. One of the most prevalent sources of Trekkies in pop culture is parodies.
In Movies:
One such example is the science fiction comedy, Galaxy Quest, where it had a satirical portrayal of Star Trek and its fans. Also, in the 1999 film, Free Enterprise, personified the lives of two Trekkies dealing with their relationships to Star Trek. Later on, in 2009, Fanboys was developed and not only referenced Trekkies, but also the rivalry between Trekkies and Star War fans. In addition to the parodies of Trekkies, there has also been two documentaries devoted to depicting real life Trekkies. This includes Trekkies and Trekkies 2.
In Television:
Another popular parody of Trekkies was in an episode of Futurama called "Where no Fan Has Gone Before," and it portrayed how the fandom had grown into a religion in a comedic sense. A component of the reknowned television sitcom, The Big Bang Theory, is the fact that the four main characters are portrayed to be Trekkies. This includes them playing "Klingon Boggle", resolving disputes using "rock-paper-scissors-lizards-Spock".
