Activities
Conventions
Trekkies attend conventions to meet other fans and their beloved actors from the television series and movies. Many Trekkies enjoy cosplaying at conventions, participating in contests and taking pictures. At conventions, there is often memorabilia for sale available for Trekkies to purchase. The Vulcan greeting is used extensively and attempts at Klingon are often to be heard. Most Trekkies attend a convention about once a year, but some may attend several. Often, there may not be specific Star Trek conventions and Trekkies will attend general sci-fi or comic conventions where other Trekkies may be located.
Collections
A Trekkie will often collect action figures or models of the Enterprise to display in their home. Some may collect signatures of the actors or even original props from the set of the television show or movies. Trekkies often display posters on the walls of their homes. The extent of the collection depends on the creativity of the Trekkie and how much they are willing to spend. Often, pieces of a Star Trek collection are purchased at conventions.
Forums
Some Trekkies cannot afford to attend conventions or create large collections, so forums offer an opportunity for all Trekkies to participate in the community. There are many internet forums, but the largest and most popular is the Memory Alpha forum. Trekkies participate in conversation about various episodes, movies, and characters. Some even participate in roleplays.
Fan Art and Fiction
Star Trek is famous for having been the subject of the first slash fiction, so fan fiction is a very important part of the Trekkie culture. Almost all Trekkies have read at least one fan fiction, and many have attempted writing them. If a Trekkie happens to have an artistic skill, they will create art portraying major characters and events from the television show. Fan fictions and fan art allow a media for Trekkies to express their strong feelings about Star Trek.
